UPDATE FROM UNITED for a Better Future!
Amigos del concilio,
The Hispanic American Council, NAACP of Kalamazoo, ISAAC, Kalamazoo Gay Lesbian Resource Center, the Association of Kalamazoo for Justice, National Council of La Raza and the YWCA of Kalamazoo joined forces to create the coalition United for a Better Future. The coalition’s goal is to create a better world for all children by solving social justice issues. The coalition's first strive towards social justice will be achieving comprehensive immigration reform.
Last evening, the coalition hosted its kick-off community meeting. Over 250 community members, elected official and volunteers attended the meeting to join arms and begin the movement towards reform. The meeting was a huge success and a step in the right direction.
United States Citizenship and Immigration Services of Detroit attended with three representatives who discussed how to avoid fraud and encouraged Hispanics in the area to ask questions, make appointments and come into their office for assistance throughout the citizenship process. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety also spoke assuring the community they are here, in Kalamazoo, to reduce the crime rate and are not interested in immigration status. Two individuals gave their personal testimonies about their battles with the immigration and what comprehensive immigration reform would mean to them. A representative from each of the organizations that represent United for a Better Future spoke briefly on their support of immigration reform. Congressman Fred Upton also spoke at the meeting about his support of the movement, and his goal—to see a bill on the President’s desk by the end of this year. Finally, the meeting ended with a call to action by the community members.

As Dr. Charles Warfield stated, “You are not alone,” the Hispanic community is not alone, together with the coalition and the entire community locking arms, we will achieve comprehensive immigration reform
As I stated last night, “Tonight is not only about immigration, tonight is not only about undocumented families. It is about unity, it's about social justice, and it’s about democratic principles.”

Amigos del concilio,
El Concilio Hispano Americano, NAACP de Kalamazoo, ISACC, Centro de Kalamazoo Gay Lesbiana Recurso, Asociación de Kalamazoo para Justicia, Concilio Nacional de la Raza y el YWCA de Kalamazoo, unieron fuerzas y crearon la Coalición Juntos para un Mejor Futuro.
El objetivo principal de esta alianza, es promover un escenario favorable para que unidos con nuestras familias e hijos, alcancemos la justicia e igualdad sociales, a través de una autentica e integral reforma migratoria permanente.
Anoche la flamante Coalición, demostró su poder de convocatoria al lograr reunir en el Gimnasio del Concilio, más de doscientas cincuenta personas, contando además con importantes presencias como la de tres funcionarios de la United States Citizenship and Inmigration Services de Detroit, quienes se ocuparon sobre el tema de cómo evitar fraudes acerca de gestiones en el proceso de ciudadanía, invitando a los asistentes y a la comunidad interesada, para que formulen sus preguntas e inquietudes, realicen sus citas por internet y que las puertas de sus oficinas estaban abiertas para ayudarlos. Igualmente, se hizo presente personal uniformado del Departamento de Seguridad Publica de Kalamazoo, para manifestar que nadie debería tener temor en llamar y reportar actos de criminalidad, porque garantizan que no preguntaran acerca de la situación o estatus legal migratorio del denunciante, pues su función es prevenir e investigar los actos delincuenciales y reducir sus índices.
Para ilustrar mejor el serio problema migratorio que existe, dos de los asistentes dieron sus testimonios personales acerca de las dificultades insalvables que pasan para lograr la ciudadanía, y que esto se podría evitar si se diera pronto una reforma migratoria definitiva. Igualmente, se presentaron representantes de cada una de las organizaciones que integran JUNTOS PARA UN FUTURO MEJOR, quienes brevemente se refirieron al porque de su presencia en la Coalición y su apoyo decidido para lograr el sueno de una reforma migratoria que de una solución integral y permanente a la situación legal de más de once millones de seres humanos indocumentados que viven en este gran país pero que contribuyen con su trabajo al desarrollo de los EEUU.
Finalmente, el congresista Fred Upton, se hizo presente para hacer uso de la palabra para comprometerse a apoyar a la nueva Coalición y que compartía el sueno de todos, de ver el proyecto de ley sobre el escritorio del Presidente reelecto Barack Obama, que al igual que el, conto con el decidido apoyo hispano en su reciente reelección.
De otro lado, es de destacar que fue muy aplaudido el discurso brevísimo pero de un alto contenido motivador del Dr. Charles Warfield, quien dijo, dirigiéndose a los asistentes “No están solos”, a lo que estos respondieron de pie aplaudiendo y coreando “Si se puede”, todo lo cual emociono a los presentes.
De esta manera concluyo esta primera reunión masiva, que respondió con su importante presencia en este evento, lo que nos da optimismo para convocar a una nueva, para el 07 de febrero, a las 6.00 pm en el gym del Concilio Hispano Americano.
Como dije anoche, "Esta noche no es sólo acerca de la inmigración, esta noche no se trata sólo de las familias indocumentadas. Es acerca de unidad, de la justicia social, y se trata de principios democráticos".
